Call for Applications: 2018 Visiting Critic with The Chart

The Chart welcomes submissions for its Visiting Critic program in the summer of 2018.

This pilot residency program will invite one visual arts critic and writer to Portland, Maine for a week of investigation of place, critical engagement and discussion, and the creation of reciprocal relationships among artists, writers, and publications. This program is aimed at critics and writers with a contemporary focus on equity, cultural care, and a spirit of tenderness and generosity.

The week may include studio visits, gallery and museum tours, conversations over shared meals, and various opportunities for dialogue with artists, writers, curators, cultural producers, and MFA students. The exact schedule for the week will be developed in tandem with the Visiting Critic once selected to structure time toward their particular interests in the art world, and there will also be some unstructured time throughout the week. The Visiting Critic will be invited to give a talk on their work early in the week and write a response piece to their time in Maine to be published in The Chart.

The Chart is an online art journal based in Maine, a platform that encourages nuanced, rigorous conversations to make visible the artists and artwork engaging in the pressing subjects of our time. We’ve most recently published work on the urgencies of grief, power, hegemony, racism, misogyny, climate change, late capitalism, and the technological turn. By centering our work in Maine and working outward, we can cultivate a living archive of Maine’s contemporary art history within national contexts, revealing connections across borders and cultures and recognizing the power of specific, regional response to matters that affect us as a nation.

Applications are due by February 10, 2018. Applications are accepted through Submittable at: https://thechart.submittable.com/submit/103277/the-chart-2018-visiting-critic
